so is an elk a common deer? I thought it was the same as moose, in fact..
There are many different types of deer. Think of it as there are many different types of cichlids (just not as extreme). Mule deer are extremely small, then there are black tail and white tail deer, then you have a few different species of elk, going up to the roosevelt elk which is the largest elk, finally you land at the moose which can attain monsterous sizes. The bull we saw was easily taller then I am at the shoulder. I'm not that tall, but his shoulder was probably around 6'.

hmmm, see quit a few Elk, and mule deer when I am at work up here in montana, but have only seen a few moose. Beautiful creatures. Seen a lot of eagles over the past five days though.
Necro, we should meet up one of these days, and hit some fishing up together. We aren't that far apart.

oh okay...Moose is what I was thinking about--Elks is a deer, even looks like a Wapiti...

My mistake was due to the fact that Moose is called Elch in German and that is why I have aqllways thought Elk to be Elch....

I was just looking at the Wiki entry, and they said in Europe Moose are known as elk. Wapiti is another name for elk (american).

So I was not so out of line....after all..

and speaking of bigest north american animal, isn't the bison bigger? Considerably bigger ( albeit not taller ) than moose?

Both the bison and the brown bear/kodiak bear are larger in mass. The moose is the tallest NA animal.

Dang skunked again on the catfish! :irked:

However I did manage to pull in a 14" 3.5 lb lmb. So difficult with all the freaking weeds here!

Must have been wonderfull!!!!

What is the diference between an elk and a moose? aren't they the same? The ones with "broad velvety" and a hunchback?

:irked: Sorry if you said that in front of me I would kill you..jk...

You can google pics, they are very different. Moose are much larger, and their antlers are built much differently.
