i also got a painted turtle on the same day.
are they ok to keep as pets? (difficulty of care?)

They are easy if you have the right setup, but the setup is fairly involved. To keep an adult you probably need a minimum 40 gallon breeder tank, about half full with an area for the turtle to haul out and bask. You also need a high intensity light (optimally with UV output) for the turtle to bask under. Additionally you need a strong filter if you don't want the tank to stink to high heaven. Otherwise, they aren't too demanding; you can buy turtle sticks and pellets at any pet store. A word of warning, they will kill just about anything else you put in there besides another turtle, including fish several times their size. Don't let their looks fool you, they are quite proficient swimmers.

Also, I would repeat the suggestion to put the clam back. There is no realistic way you will be able to provide enough particulate food for it to survive without spiking waste levels in the tank high enough to kill the thing. When a clam dies (and it will) the first thing you will notice is a hideous stench and a tank of dead fish. I remember putting a freshwater clam in an uncle's garden pond, and when it died a few weeks later the entire pond was clouded over and you could smell the thing several yards away. This pond was a couple of hundred gallons, too.

 congrats on the pike ... i have 2.
they will quickly become one of your favorite fish ... they are just 100% killing machines!!!:headbang2
