went out netting-brackish style

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I see Trinectes maculaus (Hogchoker), Poecilia latipinna (N.A. Sailfin Molly), Cyprinidon variegatus (Variegated Pupfish/Sheepshead Minnow), gobies (no idea on the species) and uros.
The minnows i'm not too sure of. Menidia beryllina come to mind but I'm not totally sure.

Nice catches.

The crabs i assume are similar to what you see at the LFS. I'm pretty sure fiddlers/red claws are native to FL.

Keep in mind they aren't 100% aquatic and will either crawl up the sealant (or that air line looks like an open invitation) to attempt to escape or wont last very long. They do best with a land area, preferably sand which they will burrow in. You could set up a pretty sick paludarium.
cool
might feed him to my aro then ,to much work to make a tank for him :D

if no one enjoys these threads then theres no reason to make them
:D

and i just noticed the un id'd fish are nipping/killing my gobies
both are cool so i dont wanna kill them or have them kill my gobies
big goby isnt looking good
:(

Way to be responsible in researching the animals youre collecting, now youve taken fish out of their natural habitat only to be killed by other fish whom it seems are much more aggressive. :clap

And just a note...i don't know the laws down there. But these probably aren't invasive species like the cichlids pulled out of canals...and may have regulations.

i pretty much know whats invasive and native lol
and i pretty much knew these were not invasive lol
:grinno:

gobies,they look like river gobies
not protected,no laws on them

sheepshead minnows
not protected,no laws on them
but they are used for bait i found out
wow i took baitfish SUE ME!
:screwy: :grinno:

You can catch more bees with honey than you can with ____..

No one has to be friends here. But let's stop.. You didn't like his opinion so argue his opinion.. don't call out on stuff that is neither here nor there..

Everyone has an opinion...and it will come out when you net a bunch of specimens from the wild throw them in a tank and they start dying.

There was just a thread in the general section where someone was asking about keeping a native fish in tank...and it was not taken lighltly. I have nothing against bringing in numbers of invasives and bait fish...but when you dont ID them and they aren't doing well just don't expect great feedback. Clearly brackish is a bit different...

my .02

Don't let them get to you dude, all the fish you caught are legal and most if not all are bait fish, not to mention easy to keep in both fresh and salt water. Checking the salinity of a brackish habitat is mostly useless so don't bother. In a brackish habitat the salinity can vary from full salt to completely fresh in a 12 hour period. To bad we don't live close to each other, netting fish is one of my favorite things and I get to do it with the local marine fisheries people on a regular basis. I do want to ask you about the Pickerel, I didn't see any in your pics and I have never caught one in brackish water, so did you catch a pickerel there or was it a miss speak?

ya i thought about that
and what sux is when i go back to get more water the water will most likely be different :irked:
so i guess i gotta learn how to make it brackish on my own
and a guy that was fishing there said he caught a pickerel there
this was my first time there, but not last :)
and you should post pix of some of your nettings :)
I wish I could post pics, (I don't have a camera) I've helped collect some really odd things like dwarf mudpuppies (maybe a new species) Sting rays, sharks, bowfin, redfin pickerels, shrimp, sirens, amphumas, popeye mullut (in freshwater) one of my favorite fish, the inland silverside great, aqaurium fish! Not to mention most game fish.

To make brackish just use sea salts and a specific gravity of about 1.005 to 1.010.
