I also hope they hold off a year or two on stocking exotic fish to see how many cichlids and P-bass made it before they restock (until they can do some population surveys). I dont know why the state isnt stocking Flagfish to control aglae and plant growth and Florida strains Largemouth bass and Bluegill?! I think the Cichlids will come back also......I just hope not in the numbers they were in (I like them in fish tanks).
I agree the state should stock flagfish and have some type limit as to their collecting and FOR ONCE enforce fishing regulations/license .
I was told by an older guy I know who has lived few miles by Glades his whole life that at one time flag fish were numerous and just as easy to catch since no regulations when it comes to collecting them and they stay in fairly shallow waters as most algae there near rocks, etc .
They were collected in mass with nets ,minnow traps as fishing bait and instead of shiners people would use buckets of flagfish as bait. Either way I don't think at this point other than isolated areas the flagfish can compete with small grass carp which the state protects.
I went herping today and the pygmy suns were fine not affected by cold spell if anything breeding now .
Florida bass and bluegill I do see plenty of.
The Glades restoration project which I was watching today looks nice as lots secluded marsh type areas with no boating, fishing allowed . If Miami doesnt rock mine as thats in the courts now they will have plenty of water to do this project.
Already I saw little turtles ,minnows, etc in the new marshes. I just hope its not all redrained for rock mining.
