Some do know what theyre doing, its a damn shame its a small minority that do know what they talk about, the vast majority got up off their asses and trick people into getting a RTC for a 10 G tank that hasnt even been cycled yet.

I'm not disagreeing with you; now that you've changed your tone a bit I am in agreement with you.
The point I was trying to get across is that not all of them deserve to be labeled as idiots. I didn't realize that they sold RTC in your area either. They even stopped selling pacu and albino channel cats around here.

They usually hire people with only the bare minimum of knowledge.. some only barely want the job.. then some of them are so interested in fish they actually care and learn.. and excel in the business.. it is just the individual and nothing more or nothing less..when they open their mouth you can usually tell right away..who is really into the hobby and who is there just biding time until their next job.. :D

Part of the reason most petco/petsmarts do not have knowledgeable employees, is people that ARE smart about animals are to busy screaming how horrible the stores they are to actully work at one and try to make it better.

I sceamed and yelled untill every employee at the petco I worked at knew what the cycling process was, knew what were proper fish to sell, ect ect.

I agree with those saying coperate is the biggest problem, Its true that when fish come in under wrong skus, we still have to leave the incorrect sku and sell it as such. Its also hard to control what your allowed to carry at the stores. If I had my way there would be no channel cats or irridesent sharks in the store. But because channel cats are a "big seller" we have to have them. I constantly fought with coperate about selling iguanas (3 yrs later they discontinued selling them in our district). There was also the fun time peroid where I kept getting in trouble for telling the customers the painted glassfish would die if they bought them, and that it was basically tourtue that they were injected with dye. Thank goodness they stopped selling those.

The worst part about working at a chain store and knowing what you are doing, is the fact you cant really refuse a sale unless the person implys they are gonna kill the animal on pourpose. So although you can explain over and over, why the fish is not gonna make it in whatever they are trying to do, you still gotta sell it.

My particular store is going to hell due to a new horrible manager, so i quit this week, which is good because i think i might have went off on the next customer who tells me that goldfish do great in a 2gal bowl and even live a whole 9 months.

best thing about working there, was the free fish I got from people coming in that didint want them... 12" RTC, Tilapia buttikoferi, two adult Leporinus fasciatus, and an adult Polypterus endlicheri

I see Petsmart and Walmart fish departments selling Pacu and RTC and Oscars with 10 and 29 gallon tanks..I guess you get what you get going to a (Mart Store) When i was a kid Kmart sold fish too, thank god its coming to an end...

everything you said makes alot of sense, they buy from the whole saler the fish that sells regardless of the other circumstances and i totally agree that if you want to keep your job you cannot be fighting and discourageing the customers.. i quess if you have any good concious feelings towards the fish you sell it must be sooooo difficult to constantly look the other way:WHOA: Maybe the stores do not want to hire the knowledable people because of the constant backlashing the higher ups go through.. it is and always will be about money in this industry as well as any other animals being sold.. look at the puppy mills.. that must be extremely hard to turn the other cheek.. :( Most people who care too much would not be suitable for the job.. you either have to be naive or callous to not have it bother you.. never thought of all the emotional things that go into being an LFS store employee..

It's like any other buisness out there. There are people who know what they are talking about because they like what they do, and there are people who just want a paycheck and couldn't care less. I'm a paramedic I've worked with some people who were great because they enjoyed thier profession and really wanted to help people and I've worked with people who I wouldn't let take care of a dead person because they were incompitant and didn't care about thier job it was just a way of makeing money, that's it. Having said all that I have to say, here in Philly it's pretty much a general rule that you don't ask PetSmart or Petco employees anything except how much does this cost. They are mostly young teenagers who have it as a part time job to make a couple bucks.

i know a girl how was turned down for a job as she had prior work in a lfs.

then a few weeks ago i went in and asked about a power head for a filter and ended up in a ten minute story of what i was trying to do and all they said was duh:confused:

16 year old confused 2 workers .

yeah i applied at a petsmart once. there were about 6 other kids there and none of them had ever kept fish. i felt soo SMRT :D
i once had a whole team of people trying to help me with fertilizers for my planted. i caqme in looking for root tabs and when i asked if they had fertilizer, they said "i don't but im sure if you go to home depot they'll have it."
dk if home depot carries aquarium ferts, but im pretty sure they dont.

thank god they dont sell SW fish at petsmarts around me!
