Pine and Fir like any other softwood will rot really quickly. Softwoods are also extremely resinous. Hardwoods, like Oak, Maple, Birch ect. are much better for aquarium use. The Manzanita that you mentioned is hardwood but remember if is has been washed up by the sea and it isn't prepared properly you may see undesirable changes to your water chemistry.
