Western Fence Lizards

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Here's a good way to catch them. Put up a length of drift fence (100 feet?) with deep collecting buckets buried into the ground on either end. Chase the lizards toward the fence. When they get to the fence they're run along side of it until they fall in the hidden buckets at the end. You can even place a large flat rock over the bucket with just a small cave looking entrance to trick them into hiding under it. I've never tired it before but that's how my friend does it in Arizona.

That's cheating :)

I think that Reptile Haven place was the guys who had the albino Nile monitor, I remember seeing it on their site back a few years.

LOL, I guess it does take the least amount of work! :D I've never tried the noose approach. Small lizards are just so damn quick. Anyone ever hand catch Racerunners? Ha....good luck!

When I was a kid I could hand catch desert iguana's, supposedly one of the fastest lizards in the world. Guess they don't like 6'4" 230 lbs. giants stumbling towards em', though.

A few years ago a kid brought in some Western Fence Lizards they had caught on a hunting trip in Central Oregon (they had a bucketful, must be that youthful vigor). Upon closer inspection, they were full of ticks, mostly around their ears and neck. I did a little research and found an interesting fact. Lyme disease is very uncommon in areas inhabited by Western Fence lizards. The reason is that the lizards have a component in their blood that destroys the Lyme Disease pathogen. An infected tick that feeds upon a WFL will actually be purged of Lyme Disease!

Anyways, I thought some of you may find this interesting, I sure did!
