Western Hognose vs Kingsnake.

Out of those two, I think a king is better suited but I think you may want to look into some other things as well. Bearded dragons, frilled dragons, uromastyx, etc all make pretty good pets and are handleable.

I've been thinking about it a lot now and I've been considering your collective inputs... and now I'm no further than before :(
Because now I'm starting to consider a Fire Skink or any small North American skink (like Five Lined or Broadheaded).
It will be another two weeks before I'll even have the opportunity to get anything else; in the meantime I'll need to do MORE THINKING!

Hey guys sorry to necropost on this but Rubber Boas have recently been brought to my attention. From what I've heard they seem ideal for my situation: not much bigger than the hognose but with the hardiness of the cornsnake and an even calmer demeanor.

Do any of you guys have any input on the Rubber Boa? So far the biggest problem with them seems to be simply finding some for sale.

It seems like all the suggestions have been ignored,
just listen to yourself and get what YOU want.

Good luck

Oh no not at all!

I really do appreciate all the input everyone provided. Practicality is just catching up with me though: Cornsnakes, Kingsnakes, and Fireskinks all need more than a 10 gallon enclosure. The Tegu is already impractical enough so I have to avoid compounding that as much as I can. I'm not too sure if (male) rubber boas can go in a 10 gallon but most people seem to think male hognoses can.

Also, I think I'm going to hold off from getting anything during the winter: every species I have expressed interest in save for the Fire Skink all brumate or hibernate in winter; which defeats the purpose.

I didn't know you were working with a 10 gallon enclosure as you've expressed interested in kingsnakes.

Consider a male kenyan sand boa if you have trouble finding a rubber boa, they have excellent temperament and take very well to handling, and look much better (at least IMO)... and additionally they are easy to find.

Kenyan sand boas do not necessarily need a dormancy period, unless you are planning on breeding them. I maintained a stable temperature and it was active and eating year around.
