I was wondering what an appropriate sized wet/dry would be for a 180 gallon tank...

I have access to a 55g tank and possibly an 80g tank to make into a DIY wet/dry. Which one, when converted into a sump, would be most beneficial to a 180g tank that is stocked with 6-8 RBPs?

Note: This is my first time making a wet/dry system and the 180g tank has 2 overflows in the back corners.

You'd be fine with a 30g lol. But I say use the 55. And that is actually very low stocking levels for a 180 compared to what most people have hehe. Get more p's or get some real monster fish :grinno:.

Hehe, I plan on making my reds very comfortable with a nice aquascape...sand, rocks, bogwood, silk ficus, clam bubbler for the lulz, and maybe a crawfish.

No less than a 30. Going bigger doesn't hurt.

Wow, nice setup! Is the shutoff valve on the pvc pipe right after the return pump necessary? I already decided to accompany my wet/dry with an FX5, but I'm going with a Koralia 4 for my powerhead.

Thanks for the thread link too btw!

It's nice if flow needs to be reduced, like if you oversized your pump compared to your overflow rate. You can't see it but a check valve is necessary in case of power loss and back siphon depending on return location.

Where is the checkvalve located? I have ZERO experience with plumbing.
It islocated between the pump and the tank.

A check valves function is to let the water flow only in one direction. And in case of pump failure or power outage, or in that case any time you may want to shut off the pump, water from the tank cannot reverse flow back toward the pump. the water will stop at the check valve...

Some will say they arn't nescesary, and they fail etc...and to just use a hole in the return under the water line, so the siphon will break...

I have never had a check valve go bad or plug for that matter, and I DO use them...
