wet/dry for a 180g

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Another noob question: What is the minimum GPH I need for an output from a water pump? I was talking to a co-worker and he said to filter my 180g tank I need at least 6000 gph....that seemed a little high.

Would this scenario work?
-30g wet/dry with a 1600 gph water pump
-2x Koralia 4 Powerheads
-Fluval FX5

6000 gph? that would be over 1/2 the tank every minute!...

ask him what he kept in that kinda current

If it were my tank I'd get a QuietOne 4000 and call it good...(1017 gph @ zero head)

At zero head, that is only 5x turnovers per hour. Still unsure what my head height will be...what is your opinion on this water pump?

I personally do not have any experience with the via aquas...I have heard some things good and bad about them but I do not know first hand...

However I do have experience with QuietOnes 3000 and 4000's and they have and still do, serve me excellent...

If it were me I'd go with a pair of smaller QuietOne 3000's in redundancy 2 x 780gph at 40 watts ea.
with 3 ft of head your looking at 650-675gph x 2 = 1300-1350gph for 80watts vs.113 watts for 1321gph at zero head for the via aqua, add 3 feet of head and you see, there goes your flow...

What type of turn over are you looking to get?

It never hurts to over filter does it? Go for 2000gph but 1600gph is perfect. I do 1300gph in a 55 gallon and let me tell you..ITS WORTH IT. Check ebay. i got my pump for only $40 brand new!

Wet/Dry's really only require 3-5x turnover, so I'd aim for 500-900 GPH, preferably on the lower end since you'll be supplementing it with a FX5 and 2 powerheads. For pump selection I would recommend a Iwaki MD-20rxlt, probably around 450-500 GPH @ 5 FT and it will only use 40-50 watts, plus Iwaki's are as reliable as pumps get, though they are pricey...

Quiet One 4000, 1000GPH with 50 watts, I haven't seen any pumps more efficient than that.

Probably about 800 GPH due to the head height, 4x per hour should work fine. If you want more flow, you can get a second pump. Most large pumps seem to have really abysmal efficiency.

The efficiency of the 6000 is pathetic in comparison, no clue why. 1500 GPH, 140 watts

edit:
just noticed you will have an FX5. A 55 gallon sump is massively excessive. A 30 gallon would still be more than enough, but don't use anything too small because the tank will probably drain 10-15 gallons into the sump when the pump is off.

The quietone 3000 would work fine, it would pump around 600 GPH and uses 40 watts. I have one on my 75, it works great.

That's like almost 24x turnover every hour...

I agree...

Ok so my co-worker said he had...in a 125g tank: 25x RBPs, 2x 14" Plecos, 2x Catfish. He said he had a pump with 6000 gph @ zero head. I would call him crazy for overstocking a tank like that, but then again, I am a total noob when it comes to fishkeeping.

Also, *crosses fingers* for drop in FX5 price when G series comes out. I think zennzzo has me sold on the Quiet One 4000. I looked into it and read some reviews and it looks to be best in slot. Incoming order of scrubbies once I get my sump built??!?!?!?:naughty:

that evil Ammonia...:headbang2:D

125g tank: 25x RBPs, 2x 14" Plecos, 2x Catfish, hmmmm not too sure that would even qualify as overstocked in my camp, maybe a decent grow out joint... ;):naughty:

Maybe he/she meant 6000 GPD, that works out to 250gph :D
