i already have a check valve on my return, the water comes from the overflows, a check valve wont work on the overflows because the water comes from the same direction. i have thought about tappping into the drain that is located near the sump but i dont know what to do exactly, adding another sump via bulkhead would work if i had the room to add another. So any other good ideas.

Is the return at the surface or lower in the tank?
if it is a surface ripper, drill a small hole is the return fittings. Assuming you have a PVC 90 or something rigid that can be drilled.
