or make the pump less gph than the overflow can handle...thats a surefire way of keeping things cool

I built that overflow that eh1421 posted and it is flawless

It's the other way arround if it is an overflow box... get a larger pump than your overflows gph and just use a ball valve after the pump on the return line.

I have a 1200 gph over flow box and I first bought a 1200gph pump (mag 12)and my overflow kept losing syphon from the pump not being able to keep up... I then got a 2400gph ( mag 24) and it works great, I only turn down the ball valve about a 1/16 turn at most.:)

You could make a 'weir' inside the tank and drill holes at the bottom of the tank to drain the water from.

This way if there is a power shortage only the water that overflows into the weir will be drained into the sump, meaning that once the water level drops below the height of the weir the draining will stop and your sump will not overflow.

Ofcourse, you add bulkheads to the holes and pvc.

Here's a pic of what i mean

Can I get away with a 20 gallon sump? I can't find a tupperware container much bigger that will fit in my cabinet??

Hello? Anyone? I could have all my bio media above the sump. Help. I don't want to build this thing if it's just gonna be too small.

Is your tank drilled for overflows? If not check out a company CPR do a search on the web for them. I picked one up. They hang on the back. They also have waht they call an aqualifter pump which starts and maintains the siphon and in the event of a power loss it will restart siphon so you never have to worry about floods. What size tank is it? I had to get a custom sump from USA Aquariums because i built my 300g into a wall without thinking about the filtration first.

My tank is a 240 gallon long. It's not drilled. I'll check out CPR. So, will a mere 20 gallon sump work?

What part of North Jersey are you in? I grew up in South Plainfield.

Check out this link to calculate what you can get away with

I built my tank into a wall and couldn't get anything to fit. So I contacted USA Aquariums and told them the dimensions I could get to work. Cost me $150 they cut the acrylic and driiled it for me I ended up with a 31x14x18 sump.
Is the tank filled yet? If not couldn't you drop a 30g thru the top of the stand?
From what Iv'e heard, CPR is one of the best overflows. EBAY has them a lot of times. Its very quiet.
I grew up in Passiac County Now living up in Sussex

check it out.... Too late.
