Hey all, I'm new/lost to the dyi sump gph and what sized drilled tank I should use for a sump...I'm planning on building an indoor wooden pond which the measurements are 8x4x3 (but will only be filled between 2-2.5 ft) so if the pond is filled, I'm looking at around 480-600 gallons. I'm thinking about keeping the pump in the pond, and the tank above the pond so that gravity will push the water back into the pond...

Would a 55 or 75 gallon tank work (something in the 4ft size would be great for where it would be placed)
And what size pump should I be using?
Thanks for any advice!!!

The rule of thumb is sump=1/3 to a 1/4 of tank size...but with the sump/filter above the pond no allowance for power failure is needed.

So use what ever tank size suits the space.

Flow rates are another arguable amount...I'd go with about 2000gph and add a power head for circulation.

You should be alright with the 75g I'd load that thing up with bio material. You want to shoot for at least a 3000gph turnover depending on stocking you might want to go more. Pondmaster pumps are good. At least I've never had a problem and thats all I use. How is the water going to fall back into the pond? Keep in mind that thing is gonna sound like Niagra falls with that much water movement

lol cool, jsodwi...the 75 gal tank would be above the pond, with a bulkhead attachment at the bottom of the tank so that the water will just spill back into the pond...

So lets get a poll then on what gph pump will be needed along with a fluval FX5:
so far burko mentioned a 2000 gph, and jsodwi mentioned a 3000 gph..

And just to recap:
480-600 gallons
75 gallon sump filled with scrubbies I'm thinking
2ft long silver arow, 17in pbass, 14 in pbass, 1.5ft rtc for now...will prob add 1 or 2 fish to this but thats it...

so what do ya think with this info?

thanks guys for the input, I appreciate it a lot!!!

So what are you gonna use a 2" bulkhead maybe pipe it down with a spraybar with a ton of large holes in it to maybe quiet it down. I think thats what I would try

hey i think the pump should be fine. Just check your pump scale on hight to gph. If it's over 1.5m high you might need a bit bigger then 1800gph. If it's under or around 1m you shouldn't have a problem it should only drop 100 or 200 gph which is still turning your pond size 3+ times a hour. I would go with a 2400gph.

I like to go 4 time an hour. Anyway pick your pump first then work out your diameter for your hole size at

should be sweet after that maybe bring your pipe for the out flow in your sump around 4' high to stop any heavy crap from going back into the pond. I'm doing the same type of filter in my 6ft tank just not that big.

I forgot to say to make the filter power out safe. Make sure the pond has enough water space to take how much water you have in the filter. This is another good reason to put your out flow pipe 4' high in your sump so it dosen't have to take all the water volume just the volume in between the water level and the out flow pipe. good luck
