Hi everyone. I was just wanted to get other peoples opinion on wet dry filters vs canister filters. I personaly have never used a canister filter. I usd to have a few of those hang on filters when I was yonger and had smaller tanks. But ever sinse I had a wet/dry set up on my first 75.gal thats all I have ever used sinse. I hear people talking about canister filters, and I was wondering if they work as well as a wet/dry. Personally I like having all my tnks over filtrated. I dont like doing wanter changes all the time (I must be getting lazy). The 75 gal. I have I am using a wet/dry with a circulation pump at 1400 gph, and I hav a 90 gal. with the same set-up. The water is always crystal clear. I was just wondering if the canister filters work as well???

you'll get a lot of different answers. I prefer wet/dry because they're easier to maintain and more versatile. Neither filter will reduce your water change schedule unless you have a lot of plants in your sump.

I believe the tendancy with most canisters is to let them go a fairly long time, allowing nitrates to build up. At least thats what I did years ago, I'd just wait until the flow diminished before cleaning it, and it would be loaded with gunk.
I believe its better to get as much decomposing material out of the water as often as is possible.
If you're willing to clean often and regularly, then a canister is good.
If a wet dry allows you to clean a pad more easily and often, removing stuff instead of leaving it in the water column.....there you go.
I do still use a magnum, but rinse the outer sleeve every couple days and bleach the micron cartridge about once per week and still do daily 20% or more water changes.

I originally had a small pump like 300gph. I was using the pump that ran the protien skimmer on my ocianic 150. I didnt use the skimmer bacuese I had it on a fresh water. When it burnt up, I went a little overboard. But, the water is always crystal clear. And I had it overstocked with fish. I was so happy with the set-up that I put the same one on my 90 gal.

i always wondered about canisters in that, how does the bacteria in there get oxygen? if the oxygen in the water is enough, then all that biowheel crap is just marketing?

The more oxygen the aerobic bacteria can get, the more efficient they are at removing ammonia/nitrites. Same principle as a trickle filter. something like that...

both are good, i perfer wet/dry's, but i use more canisters

W/D simply for it's potentials. You can fill the accesory resivoir with as much bio as you can afford.Or you can buy 3+ large canisters like fx5's,which would be alot more money than one large W/D.
