wet/drys vs canister filters

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I use 2 FX 5 filters on my 100 gal.I love them,My water quality is great.
These new canisters are much better than some of the old ones.
I am filtering 1214 us gal. per hour between the two of them.(They are rated at 900 gal empty-607 gal with media)
They hold about 6L of filter media in 3 huge baskets, and best of all, they are self priming.I paid about 600.00 for both,so the price isn't really that much more.I clean them about once every month and they are pretty easy to work with.Wet dry filters are good choice as well, but I like the space I have under my tank,as well as the silent operation.

You could build several very nice wet/dry filters for $600:D

I would like to pick one of these canisters up just so I can say I've had one. I just can't bring myself to spend that kind of jack when wet/drys are so much cheaper.

also :welcome:

The answer to your question is both and neither. On a big monster tank that is bare bottom, I'd run a canister, as w/d overflows won't touch the bottom generally. In a planted tank a canister will be your best friend, and a w/d your worst enemy. In a heavily stocked monster tank, a w/d will be your best friend. And for mechanical filtration... both suck compared to a few different types of filters.

I've never built one,but i have bought one.It cost me 300.00 for the sump,100.00 for a pump and that's not including the cost for the bio material.I would guess that you could build one alot cheaper, but for straight out of the box filtration,I think they are worth it.
And thanx for the welcome
