Wet Pet, final questions!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
You, my friend are derailing the mans thread. I kept a Midas with a coke bottle half full of water, he liked pushing it around the tank! Bottom line is it's a crapshoot adding any fish together, loads of people think that a Jack Dempsey can coexist with an Oscar and many times thats true but in my younger days of fishkeeping I had two Oscars killed by a Jack Dempsey. People like movement in there tank so I made a recomendation to him. Sometimes it works out sometimes it dont .

As fish keepers it always trial and error. Some combos work others don't, I have successfully kept loaches and cichlids together. Although with a single big male cichlids aggression levels can be high but with ample hiding spaces for the loach i can see it working.

Hey guys thanks for the interest in my post. I think this is what makes MFK the best fish site on the web. I am here to learn more about the fish I keep and give them the best chance at a happy, healthy environment that the animal can thrive in. When I brought him home I new all bets were off with any tank mates at all. The fish is beautifull but is full of aggression, which is what I wanted for a wet pet that was meant to live by themselves. Personally I wouldn't serve up any other fish to this tank because I do care and it would be wrong. Thanks for the solid advice by many, has anyone got to look at the pics in the thread page 2? Could you give me your best guess to male or female, and species Red Devil / Midas / or MidEvil? Thanks guys!

Although it looks to be male, best way to be sure is to vent him/her. Also, just assume it's a Midevil unless purchased from a reputable dealer (Don Conkel, Rapps, COA, etc). Either way, it's a very nice fish and should make for a wonferful wet pet. Keep us updated with his progress.

His pointed mouth tells me red devil. But his tall body says Midas. Prolly a midevil. He looks great though.

That thing looks male to me. I am growing out a solo Midas by himself in a 500l tank, I think that would be about 130 gallon. I just keep it like that.
I'd rather have one Maserati then 10 Toyotas. And I can feed as much as I want without worrying about the water quality, resulting in growth rates of 1-1,5 inch a month.
An RD doesn't take a year to get big with good water conditions. He should hit 8 inch within a couple of months.
Midas aren't that aggressive to smaller fish by the way, some convicts should work. Just don't put another 12 inch cichlid with them when there isn't enough room.
