Personally, I would go with a jag, they remind me of dovii in terms of appearance and personality. Shame your so limited as there are so many options for that tank.
Native to where? Here? Don't know how much you know about NZ native fish, but they aren't really up there with large CA cichlids in terms of personality.
Haha forgot about the eels, I'm not really a fan of them eh! They get huge too, but slowly. Generally tend to spend all day sitting in a hole one larger, not really much of a "pet", though they can become fairly tame in the wild if fed regularly. Maybe I should start feeding the ones in the stream below our place...
Getting off topic, but it's my thread so meh! I might go for a walk tomorrow and take the camera, see what I can find. Check this out; http://youtu.be/zp7ToxFod3k
To your original question l think your best choice would be a midas type... I currently have all three... they all make great wet pets...I find that the Midas is the most outgoing and responsive of those....here are some quick shots I took after reading this thread... Notice which fish are facing the camera... As they are responding to me approaching the tank...
As for the derail....those eels look impressive... And like something out of a sci fi movie
