I'd vote a convict for all of the tank sizes you mentioned, if its a 55 then jack Dempsey, also parrot fish is a shout for a 55

Yes green terrors are personable. Mine flared up and would attack the glass anytime someone got within a few feet of his tank. Would also "dance" for food flaring all his fins and moving funny in jerking zig zags until I fed him

Green sunfish have been compared to native oscars by many people, and they stay a more managable size. Not sure what dimensions are on a 45 but I'm getting one for my 30 long in a week or so and it should be ok for life (30 long dimensions are 36" x 12" x 16").

So that's still my vote.

I agree, I sold my old breeding pair because they were some of the least personable cichlids I've kept.
