Wet pet or community tank for 72 gal?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
72 bowfront? I would say its adequate for a gt or jd, though i wouldnt recommend a jd for a wet pet setup as they are not very sociable when kept alone ime.

I'd recommend a flowerhorn above all else. Loads of personality, lots of different looks to choose from, rewarding fish to keep.

Water is a bit harder around here, maybe 7.5 or a little bit above so jd might be a better choice. I also plan on getting like 5 of them to try and single out a breeding pair and seel the rest when they get bigger. I also like the idea of using swordtails as dither fish which would make lots of little babies(and maybe some food for the jds). Are there any other viable options such as some other tetras? Would a smol poly like a senegal or delhezi work?
You could use Astyanax mexicanus, the blind cave tetra, they range in the same areas.

The Wet Spot has some in atm

I agree JDs are not very social like say an Oscar, or any Amphilophus. What you could do is a single male Lyonsi. They are said to stay closer to 10in.

I wanted a fh but I’m a bit wary of all the possible diseases that they can get because of their genetic makeup. Also a 72 gal. seems a bit too tight for a 10”+ fish imo. I’m still debating whether or not to get one though since my lfs has the freaking cutest lil’ guy that keeps chasing my finger whenever I hold it up to the glass. He is ‘t the most perfect one and looks more like a cull but his personality just blows me away.

Would be a good size for 1 HD and some mollies... HD aren't as "wetpet" as some other cichlids... they dont do much during the day BUT you can hand feed them and they have a personality of their own for sure

There are a few puffer options if you are interested in going that route, just depends if you want something more active or you dont mind lukers, which you may not see much of depending on tank decor...

Also need to know your commitment levels, coz some are high maintenance while some are just straight up pricey...

here's my old lyonsi at 11.5"

I do think one would be fine in a 72. If he got to be this big, could probably use an upgrade, wouldn't be the end of the world if he stayed in a 48x18 though, imo.

blochii I believe, it was a big one too prolly 11-12"

Here's an old video, right at the end I show the cat. this was when the tank was new still I think and the cat was hiding in the corner from the vieja. After a while the cichlids left the cat alone
