how many gph should you have on a wet dry when comparing it to the gallons in the tank, like what is the ratio?

What size tank? How many fish?

My 75 has a 700GPH overflow an im using a Mag drive 7 pump.

Id go like 4:1 about the same ratio you should be at for a canister , my DIY wet dry on my 135 has a 800gph pump does an awesome job , mines almost 6:1

my 120 has 3 xp3 filters, each are 350gph witch it 1050. that is about 8 to 1

The xp3 are probably rated without filter material and at the pump. Typically canisters or any pump is going to be much less when you run it to the tank due to head pressure.

everybody you guys have to remember head height and pushing against media in canisters. a mag drive 7 will not push 700g at 3 ft. it's rated at 700g at 0ft. canisters are worse because it depends on the media in it. a xp3 will not push 350gph if the canister is on the floor and the top of the tank is 3ft from the floor. all of these pumps and cannisters are rated at 0ft.the higher the return hose the less gph. example my 180gs have sumps and mag 7's as the return pump. from the pumps to the top of the tanks is 4ft the mag 7 pushes 475gph at 4ft.

my tanks (125, 265, and 300) all turn over 2-3x per hour with heavy stocking levels. Everything works fine. I don't go for a whirlpool power waster when using a wet/dry.
