i agree with rallys. I have a turnover rate of about 2-3x per hour

how many gph should you have on a wet dry when comparing it to the gallons in the tank, like what is the ratio?

Depending on the bio-load and the size / efficiency of your filter, anywhere from 2x to 10x the tank size per hour.

Start low (2x) and check chemistry going in and coming out of the filter after it is established and adjust size (.25-.33 x size of tank) and flow accordingly.

Without knowing exactly what the Detrious / ammonia / nitrite content of the water coming out of the tank is this is as far as we can go.

For a starting point average what others are doing for your load / size tank.

everybody you guys have to remember head height and pushing against media in canisters. a mag drive 7 will not push 700g at 3 ft. it's rated at 700g at 0ft. canisters are worse because it depends on the media in it. a xp3 will not push 350gph if the canister is on the floor and the top of the tank is 3ft from the floor. all of these pumps and cannisters are rated at 0ft.the higher the return hose the less gph. example my 180gs have sumps and mag 7's as the return pump. from the pumps to the top of the tanks is 4ft the mag 7 pushes 475gph at 4ft.

I understand the interest in sump GPH to tank size
But turnover rate of the actual sump makes little sense
If you have 55gal sump during operation only 1/2 at most will be filled
And it still doesn’t matter how fast it’s turning over

If you’re interested in the amount of media vs. flow rate sure it matters

I think that people are talking about the turnover rate of the entire system not of the volume of the actual sump.

wow a already got like 15 replies in one day. I dont have the tank yet, but im planning on a 300 gallon from glasscages, it would be freshwater.
