your getting your water from a different source than her so just because the ph starts the same the gh kh can be different so the ph changes and the cheapest best way to cycle a tank without contamination is a fishless cycle with ammonia

Not sure what you mean here... the situation is not a comparison between her set-ups and mine. I'm fine with my tanks. I just mentioned that the tank hasn't been contaminated (with chemicals, etc.), because I owned the tank right before her and I haven't cleaned it before I gave it to her. I've also never had any problems with fish dying in this tank, so the problem definitely isn't due to a contamination of the tank.

My question was whether the death of almost all of her rasboras could be:
1) the gravel, plants, or driftwood in the tank
2) high pH (although all her other fish have always been fine, including sensitive neon tetras)
3) a bad batch of rasboras (in which case, should there be a concern for the whole tank having been "contaminated"?? should she do something with the tank before adding other fish, to rid the tank of any parasites/baacteria/worms/whatever?)
4) just bad luck

It seems like she has better luck with smaller tanks... She's never had a problem with her 2.5, 5, or 10 gal tanks, but had a problem when initially setting up her 29 gal tank two years ago (huge spread of parasites), and again with this 75 gal. Clearly, cycling isn't a real issue here, since the water parameters (besides the pH), is all perfect...
