VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - People have gathered at Canada Place to take a look and snap some photos of the dead whale wrapped around the bow of a huge cruise ship. One man tells News1130 it is a real tragedy. "It's a great shame. It's too bad that the ship didn't see the whale before it hit it. It's too bad."
Julie Benson with Princess Cruises says crews were shocked and saddened to find the whale impaled on the ship. She says this kind of thing is very rare but they do their best to make sure it doesn't happen. "Whenever whales are sighted, our crew tries to avoid them and get as far away from the whales as possible. This could mean altering course, or reducing the speed of the ship."
She says they use whatever technology they can to locate whales but mostly rely on old fashioned sighting. When and where the whale was hit is not known - it could have been a few days ago. It is grey and white and about 25 or 30 feet long, wrapped around the bow of the Sapphire Princess. The Vancouver Aquarium is helping out with the investigation.
