Whale Shark- Georgia Aquarium question

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I would love to go work at Georgia just for the challenge of it all. I'm afraid I would just be a small pebble to them and not really be able to do much. The staff they have are some of the best in the biz so I am sure diet is not the only thing that is wrong. My guess is they have a trematode or some other parasite that is making them sick. I would love to know what actually happened in that necropsy.

Well - I hadn't thought of a parasitic infection - although certainly a possibility.

Either way - they need to fix the problem - before the new sharks are added.

And while to most people - 500 lbs of fish, shrimp or krill per day may sound very expensive - to major Public Aquarium like the Atlanta Aquarium - you could be assured that it's figured in as part of their regular food budget.

Hmmm ... interesting.

So the listed cause of Ralph's death is Peritonitis, and Norton was Euthanized.

But it will be interesting to see of the two death's are actually linked.

Personally I still don't think that it's a great idea to plan on keeping 4 adult Whale Sharks in an aquarium of only about 6 million gallons.

Is it really suited for one whale shark?

If they are that rare a fish, Georgia Aquarium sure are doing there best to keep it that way.

Is it really suited for one whale shark?

Hmmm - I guess it really depend on who you ask.

According to Atlanta Aquarium's administrators - Yes -more than enough.

But personally - I would think a tank that size may be suited for keeping 3-4 Great Hammerheads, or even a couple of Tiger Sharks. I don't believe it's really suited for keeping the Largest Fish in the Ocean. IMPO to keep 4 adult Whale Sharks they would need a tank that's at least 4-5 times the volume of the tank they are currently in - so about 24-30 million gallons.

But then I'm no Expert - just a person that loves sharks. ;)

There are at least two aquariums in Japan keeping Whale Sharks that I know of - Okinawa and Osaka. The one in Osaka had some twelve years ago when I visited and still had some when I went last month. Whether it is the same sharks the whole time I am not sure. I will post some pics a bit later for everyone.
