Whale Shark- Georgia Aquarium question

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
But as well know - Ego or "Just Because" isn't enough of reason to get any shark. That is a path that to nothing but trouble - for both the shark & shark keeper.

It takes love for the shark, a commitment to do what's right for the shark, and the financial resource to carry those plans out.

Which means for a Bull Shark - you'll be spending about 1 million dollars or more for the tank large enough to house it for it's entire life. And on a personal note - if I we're going to spend that much on a shark tank - it would like be an Atlantic Tank with Nurse & Sandbars or maybe a reef tank with reefs sharks - like the Blacktip Reef.

Agreed.

99.99% of the general public would never be able to comprehend the care required to house a bull. Of that .01% that could, I have yet to meet one who didn't already have an outstanding grip on captive shark care. And those are also people who already have massive tanks set up with years of shark experience. And once you have that under your belt, you realize that you don't want to keep bulls.

My love for them has grown out of countless hours of field research, then collection, transport and captive rearing. Alot of my animal background is based in South American history....animals tied into culture there (fish, reptile and mammal alike). The bull is a very powerful force in the history of that area of the world.

You put together the money, I'll design, build and run the tank.

I say we go grant happy, in the name or research of course...Then I get to be in charge of feedings..and decor...and, and..more I am sure, LOL....and when it comes to design, pshh, you know I wont shut up long enough for you to do it all by yourself!! LOL *wink wink* Bwahahaha...

Hey Matt and Water Baby, We have many times suggested a Bull Shark Exhibit, only to be told that they are too hard to keep. I personally think they are a beautiful animal and you can design an exhibit just for them. I would be interested in what requirement you both feel should go into the exhibit. When we designed the Louisiana Exhibit at the Alexandria Zoo we had a Bull Shark display in a abandon Shrimp Boat, but because of staff ended up as a aviary!

Dave, bulls aren't as bad as most large facilities say - but about ten fold what the general public thinks. I love them. I fight a little every day to get a pup in here for our collection. If you want help with tank lay out, filter setups and getting some brought in - let me know.

Hi Matt, on building it, we would do the exhibit design and fabrication, I would just need someone like yourself to make sure we are doing it right, I have a marine bio guy on staff, but he doesn't have enough experience with bull sharks. At this point we don't have a specific project to design for it, but it may come up at anytime. We were just put on hold with the new Ripley's Aquarium in Canada where we were designing for a Greenland Shark. Another neat animal!

Are you at Mall of America or the Zoo? If you are at the Mall say hi to Tony Davi for me.

Dave
