What??? A Responsible Betta Breeder?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
For the IAL thing, if your tap water is extreme bad. Let your water age (let it sit for 24 hours) before adding the IAL onto it(IAL will take care the rest). Don't let your water sit too long as it will become what they call it as "dead" water, it will have a funny smell to it. And by tannin the water, it may not be what you think it will be. The IAL will make the water look like tea much like using black water extract(dark yellow/brown coloring). That's how tan it will be, you will not be able to see the full coloration of your betta unless you transfer it onto clear water. But you know what, IAL will protect your fish from fin rot and other disease. Also reduces stress...as far as I know, those wood only help to lower the water pH and give the water its color. IAL does more than that.
Every grand master breeder in thailand will tell you to use IAL for best health and growth. Not only do they use IAL, banana leaf, papaya leaf, mango leaf, and lemon grass are also all involved in it. They all have something in common, but are used in different combinations. :)

Beautiful Betta you're getting. I used to have a few and bred them as well. It can be tedious. I know of a place that gets so beautiful Moon Tails and Short Fin Males, if you're ever interested.

Actually, I am interested. I looked around here, but only saw some really decent looking Halfmoons ones once. Now that LFS is no longer importing high quality bettas. Besides, I'm actually beginning to look into constructing a breeding set up for exotic plecos and a few pairs of discus already. I figure a couple pairs of betta won't kill me, and they might actually be ready to sell sooner than the plecos that grow at ridiculously slow rates. My biggest problem is will be selling them and trying to trust others with my surrogate children. :)

Not as soon as what you might they it'll be. Bettas can breed at the age of 4 month. BUT, they will not show all of their true colors until 8 months-10 months.

I'm definitely researching it. I just don't ever do anything without understanding how it works. This way I know how to use it properly. I recognize that these natural product can be very potent, but if misused can do more harm than good.

Oh, and a 4 month old betta at close to full size and capable of breeding is light years ahead of some of these plecos. ;)

There is no way to over use IAL and the rest I listed. Just make sure the leaf are as dried as paper and no moisture to it. Just wait till it tans the water, you might think you did too much to it. Banana leaf doesn't tan much, but its best to cure stuff such as fin rot if it ever break through the IAL water(its not uncommon either). :D

Gorgeous Betta- wish my boss would let me keep a little tank on my desk. You'd think I'd get some nudge as he's also my boyfriend ;)

That really is one of the most beautiful betta's I've seen, I lived in Thailand for 6 years, but been traveling there for years as well... we used to keep those little bettas in our room in boarding school.

Looks like your giving him a much better home than most places so don't worry! I've seen them survive in emptied out (But cleaned) whiskey bottles....

Tell him it makes you happy to go to work, helps you feel more relaxed, and you think you'd be more productive if you were happy and relaxed versus stressed out. ;)
