What Additional Filter to Pair with My 2 AquaClear 110's on a 120g Tank?

I didn't even consider the bypass issue - and now that you bring it up, these power filters probably do have a lot of bypass. Now you got me all confused again...lol. I love my AC110's but it would be nice to keep my tank as close to the wall as possible. If I were to ditch the power filters all together, would I need 2 canisters then? I do have a brand new wet-dry I bought 10 years ago that's never been used - maybe I just bite the bullet and give it a whirl and see what happens. I could have a FX5 and the wet/dry...would that be sufficient? And if don't do the wet/dry - what would I need to supplement the FX5 with?

The entire wet/dry unit is 23 1/2" x 12" deep x 14" high (from the bottom of the filter to the bottom of the drip tray). The pump that came with it is a brand new Rio 3100 pump. It says on the box it is rated to 900 gph. However, at around 3-4 ft. it says around 700 gph (looking at the graph that is on the box).

Right now I'm thinking one of my AC110's with this wet/dry should suffice...right?

You might as well run both AC110s. That w/d filter isn't huge for the tank (it's big enough assuming there is at least 3 gallons of bio media space) and you can run the ACs with all sponge filler for mechanical. Only reason not to is you might not have space on the back if you need an overflow box. Is the tank drilled?

Oh, and if you were looking for the easiest way to simply increase bio filtration (and your tank isn't drilled), and you didn't care about mechanical, I would say just run a couple of large sponges with an air pump or powerhead with the ACs. Cheap, easy and effective.

Really? This wet/dry isn't big enough? At one point I was looking at an Eshopps wet/dry and the one rated for 120 gallon tanks was the same exact size as the one I have. If the one I have is too small, then so be it. I'm torn on using it or not anyway (as you can tell by this thread).

Here's my bottom line...I just want something that will be super effective overall for mechanical and bio filtration and will be as easy to maintain as possible. I love the 110's because they are so easy to access, clean, and maintain. I also hate them because they require the tank to be so far away from the wall - but I can deal with that. I thought I could fill the 110's with sponges for mechanical and bio filtration and then use the wet/dry for additional bio - that or a canister filter like the XP3 or XP4.

Since I already have a brand new wet/dry, I figured I would use that...but if you're telling me it's too small, then I'll just sell it and get a canister. Anyone interested in a brand new wet/dry with a brand new pump and all the plumbing

P.S. My tank is not drilled but I can fit the 110 and the overflow box on one side of the tank so that's not an issue.

I would run the wet dry with a rena xp3 or eheim classic. The fluval fx5 would be nice with it, but quite frankly I just dont think hagen equipment has the longevity of the other two

The fx5s are very reliable I wouldn't hesitate to buy another one.

Hook up the w/d and fill it with bio-media hell you will still be filtering 600gph with it combined with the ac110 youl get the best of both worlds. Besides that you can spend the $ that you were going to spend to buy the media lol.

I had a similar issue. My 100g had two hot mags on it. Stock then, was a hait m/f and a beani m/f. I have since moved them to their own tank, beanis in a 37g and haits in a 20g, respectively.

Doing a trimac tank with a pair of breeding godmanni and have upgraded to TWO FX5's.

Yes, two of them for a 100g.

I am still a n00b, so to speak, in the hobby, but from what I know - get what YOU want.

As long as you're meeting the needs of your stock, then excess filtration becomes personal preference.

IMO, at least.
