I am going to walmart to pick up some small earthworms and frozen mussles for my cichlids. Anything else I can get at walmart that I could try? I thought maybe shrimp but I'm not sure which kind to get. Suggestions would be helpful.

Ok thanks. One thing I have heard is the little debate on precooked vs. non precooked and it was something I was worried about. Any other cheap things I could try?

Whiting fillet.

Unfortunately, walmart doesn't have the full function meat department that a grocery store will. That is where I get a lot of "fresh cuts" for mine....whole beefhearts, clams, oysters, scallops, various fish fillets, and the like. As far as frozen, if walmart has any, I also feed squid, different shrimps (I shoot for uncooked, but cooked is ok, just not quite as nutritious), and again, fish fillets. There are lots of options to get creative with, and the variety is good for them as well. I started with all of these for my polys and found that the cichlids love them, too.

The big Walmarts have a frozen seafood section as well as a fresh section.

precooked won't hurt them, per se. It just won't help them as much. If you were trying to make an argument that it would hurt them it would be that fish are not used to consuming meat that has had it's proteins denatured by heat (i.e. cooked), therefore they won't be able to digest some of it.

I only feed mussels to my puffer, the rest of the seafood I put into a frozen food mixture I make that includes bananas, broccoli, carrots, peas, chicken liver, shell on shrimp, brine shrimp, garlic extract, paprika and some other stuff. Shoot me a pm if you want the recipe, it's an omniverous food that I have had great success feeding to all kinds of fish. It will brighten their colors, make them more active, and, in a few cases, induce spawning. I guess it's only problem is that it's too good, so I only feed it every other day. Plus it's like $15 for 2-3 months supply.
