What Am I (my first Gar)?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
he will eat pellets and shrimp. might jus take a lil while b4 he takes them but dont be alarmed if its a few days b4 he takes any of it. mine were only on feeders when i got them. now they eat pellets willingly and shrimp n anything else i throw in all the time.

Thanks again ethnics. I threw in a Hikari stick in there, he nosed at it a couple of times but didn't take it. I might do a 25%-50% water change water, rinse the filters and remove the pellet if he hasn't eaten it. I might tray shrimp before I do the water change.

when did u add it to ur tank n when was the last time u did a water change? if it was recent u shouldn't need to do one just yet. gars are pretty hardy if u ask me. no need to do one if he doesn't accept a pellet.

ethnics - Added the Gar to my tank last night, and before I did I did a 75% water change. It is a 20gal tall used as a quarrantine/hospital/fry tank. There is also a bircher that I got at the same time, who is divided from him. The bircher is showing slight sins of fin rot so I added Mela and Pima flex as a preventative measure. From the 3-4 years of experience wtih aquariums I have learned fresh water is great for growth and aiding the resistance of illness. I could just clean thouroughly clean the filter, but I would not touch the bio-wheel, since it has been a while since I did that.

And this is very much a lesson well learned that will serve you well for many years to come.

As far as gar go....Yeah they can handle lower WQ but does that mean they should? IMO no they should not. Keeping up with good water changes in a gar tank adds much to keeping these fish in prime conditions. It is wise to keep them (waterchanges) up even if you do not think you have to do so.
