what am i?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
That's interesting. I've never noticed mine changing color after a water change and I'm pretty certain its a she.

This is my female. From what I understand, the females in the saxtilis group get the white line near the top of the dorsal, which mine has.

This is the example of cr. anthurus I found online.

my 2 svenis, my frenata, and my 3 lucius all turned a very vivid red in the belly and dorsal.

im honestly leaning towards cr. saxatilis. i dont know though. sax pikes suck for i.d.ing!

They DO suck to ID! I'm lost to be perfectly honest with you. When I study the two pics I posted a little more, I notice that the spangling on the cr. "anthurus" extends to the dorsal and tail fins. I'm not convinced about mine any more.

I would say that this fish is definitely a male. The white line along the dorsal is a trait of lugubris group pikes and not the saxatilis group. In addition, females are usually devoid of spangles. They certainly have much fewer than males. Plus, as mentioned, they develop very large, round bellies that turn pale pink to bright red when ther are "in the mood". Also, note the belly striations on your fish. Another sign that your fish is indeed male.

I think anthurus is an overly used identification when nothing else is obvious. For comparison purposes look at the humeral blotch on my female. Doesn't get any more well defined that this.

i hate i.d.ing sax type crenicichla.

Regarding this fish... tough to say. It has characteristics of both saxatilis and sveni. I'm tending to lean towards saxatilis. Sveni typically have more, well defined blotches along the back.

same here. the only thing is, its lacking the humeral spot i see on most saxatilis.

It appears to have one, just poorly developed.

Ok, so we know my fish is male. Thanks scat!

Now do we agree that crenipterus and I have the same pike?

For the love of all that's holy, what in the world is this thing!!!
