Now do we agree that crenipterus and I have the same pike?

I don't think so. Look at the position of the humeral blotch on the two fish. Yours is right on the mid line whereas crenis appears to be situated above the midline. This would make them two different species. Which two species is the question.

With that said, the humeral blotch being directly on the midline is more a trait of saxatilis leaving us still guessing as to what Creni's pike really is...

Just curious, what makes you so certain that it's male?

every other sax creni i have ever owned (6 to date) were all females, and colored up after every water change. this guy never turns red, but all of his color intensifies.

Its pretty simple actually. Has nothing to do with the belly, although that helps. All you have to do is advert your eyes to the dorsal fin. Since its a Saxatilis, it SHOULD have at least one dorsal spot if its female. :) Yours is lacking it. Like Mark said, the white in the dorsal is mainly for Lugubris pikes! :)

Do you have any better pictures? Especially about the suborbital markings and just behind the operculum? Collection area? Gorgeous fish, and so far all the pikes that have been posted are male, except for Marks exceptional female anthurus! :D
