I believe that my bonded pair is ready to spawn. There is a lot of tail slapping and twitching. They swim together and examine the same areas in the tank. They are also exhibiting beautiful colors. I have seen the two of them do this for several weeks now so I really don't know what to think. If this is breeding behavior, what else can I expect? What are some signs of bonafide Festae mating?

There are no tell tale signs. Festae decide when they're ready. The rituals can last for months. How big are your Festae, what's in the tank with them, where is your tank displayed?

Male is 6" and female is 5". Two other Festae share a 125gal. tank with them, 5" female and 2.5" of unknown sex. The tank is in my living room. The longest lasting dither was killed today too.

Sounds like they are getting ready.Have they started cleaning a spot for eggs yet?

I have to get another camera. My current one takes poor photos of the tank. I'll try to get some pics later today. I designed my tank to have areas with hiding places followed by empty swimming spaces. There's nothing that obstructs the Festaes moving and swimming space. There is a fake hollow log, a few fake plants to obscure the openings of the four clay pots, driftwood, and a piece of tile angled against the side of one of the pots. The pair stay close to the tile and fake hollow log. The male has cleared all the rocks between the tile and the pot all the way down to bare glass, making a cave. He also has dug a pit at the forward facing opening to the hollow log. I planned on switching out most of this decorum with two large and intricate pieces of driftwood. I decided to wait on this because of the pair's behavior. I don't want to do anything to stress them if they are planning on spawning.

If the lights in the tank go dim and you hear Sinatra playing, they're ready.
