what are some good ways to keep nitrates low ?

I'd really really like to see pics of this. I plan on setting up a 180 with a sump, so every idea is valuable.

I could post pics once I have mine setup but it will probably not ready for few more weeks.

As for "stuffing more bio media" into your filters... That won't change nitrates at all. The bacteria on your filters and in your tank will only process the available waste and multiply accordingly. So, if they're already doing a good job ( 0 nitrites, 0 ammonia ) then you don't need extra media. Also, nitrates are the final step in the nitrogen cycle.... Water changes are the only way to eliminate them.

Yup your right - if the nitrate level is too high for the volume of water more bio-media won't lower it, only if the nitrate level is high. A larger tank or less fish in the tank is needed to lower the ppm. My Bad.
