ive seen pics before and was wandering if anyone knows the names of the polys that get real big like 2 ft or so?

congicus, endlicheri are the biggest. Lapradei get pretty big too.

P. ornatipinnis ('ornate' bichir)- 27"(closer to 18-24 inches in aquaria)
P. endlicheri endlicheri ('saddled' or 'red' bichir)- 32", possibly more
(subspecies)P. endlicheri congicus ('giant' or 'congo' bichir)- 39"
P. Bichir lapradei ('Lapradei' bichir)- 24"
P. bichir bichir-30+ ''
P.ansorgii-28-30''+

if you're talking about 2ft+ max wild size, then all low jaw species would fit the bill, i.e. bichir bichir, bichir lapradei, endlicheri endlicheri, endlicheri congicus, ansorgii. Plus a couple upper jaw species, i.e. ornatipinnis, teugelsi.

keep in mind it's the max wild size recorded, so not all wild individuals will necessarily reach this size.

now if you're talking about being able to grow one out in aquariums to 2ft+, then scratch lapradei off that list for sure. teugelsi looks at best borderline, if not worse like the lapradei. ansorgii, we don't know yet. endlicheri endlicheri and ornate would be borderline. the remaining two should be able to past the 2ft mark with a little help from good genes.

ps. teugelsi is long and skinny, so it won't be as big as an arm, unless you have very skinny arm :D

ive seen ornates with a length close to the length of my palm to my elbow. :)
I am 6' 5" and from the middle of my palm to the inside bend in my elbow is about 14". Usually in an adult male it is aprox 18" from finger tips to the outside bend of your elbow.

cubit:
: any of various ancient units of length based on the length of the forearm from the elbow to the tip of the middle finger and usually equal to about 18 inches (46 centimeters)

ok. so? yeah. maybe they were of that size.

I am guessing that Ornates are not that comman in the Philipinnes. Here 14" is just a healthy growing Ornate.
