prefer something fairly uncommon, and not something you can get from a big box store .

Tank is 5x2x2.5 (185g) will move into a 8x4x2.5 (600 gallon) in about 180 months

I do like the ornates are they kept solo or in a group ? and how active are they. Not familiar with the bolt I will have to check it out ty.

They can be kept solo, activity is not as much as pictus, cories or Callichthys though. I would say average for a catfish (lots of sitting when no food)

Really does depend what you are after. Something you see a lot of? Something which interacts with you? Something always on the go? Something really different and somewhat reclusive? Something with a bit of attitude?
there are many cats which would fall in each category and some which fall in multiple ones.

my choices would be dwarf giraffe cats, synodontis (decorus or angelicus) , jaguar cats, or black lancer cats,. The giraffe and jaguar cats are pretty cryptic but the synodontis and lancer cats would probably be out more often.

I have had a few synos.... never see them. I can hand feed them in their hides but if it's not dark they aren't out:( have Angelicus and eruptus.

Jaguars look pretty cool, the harlequin Lancer looks nice to but I've read they are a hider.

Thanks for all the in put guys keep em coming.
