I have a 4" male Salvini that has paired off with a 4" Convict. The Convict is different than any other I have seen. It is prodominatly white with faint black vertical stripes, pink fins, and blueish/purple eyes.

The Salvini laid probably 400 eggs about 36 hours ago. As of now, none of them have turned white and the look like they could be fertilized.

Has anyone ever seen this cross breed? Is it possible? I know Convicts will breed with almost any thing but this just seemed odd.

What is the general feeling on letting fish like this breed and allowing the fish to live/grow and possibly be sold to the lfs? Is it frowned upon? Or is it okay as long as I let them know exactly what they are?

I don't have a problem with you letting your fish hybirdize in your own home or growing one out to see what it looks like. I don't like letting them out onto the market. Use them as feeders.

Yeah if you want to keep them, that's fine. However I have to agree with Aquanero in that they should not be released into an open market.

they shouldn't be released, but u should grow one out and take pics and post them. Im really curious to see what its gonna look like. that a big variation in colors

If you post the same thread in the hybrid section I'm sure that it will warrant different feelings from this secton. Personally, I have no problem with hybrids. I don't think that they should all be culled or used as feeders. But I also don't think that selling them on the open market is responsible. Many hybrids look like full-bloodied species. The problem with that is that they are sold as genuine species that in turn breed and pollute the gene pool of the fish that they are being sold as. Hybrids in private collections are great. Many times they turn out to be very beautiful and unique fish!

Happens all the time. quite a common hybrid.

anyhoo, to the OP, you can do what you'd like in the privacy of your own home, but it is generally considered a bad idea to release hybrid fish back into the market. there really isn't any demand for them (other than the popular Flowerhorns and Parrot fish), and most respectable LFS probably wouldn't take them anyway

No but i have posted pics of a convict/JD cross..ima have to see if i can locate the pic though

Nice try taking jabs at one another, guys. This thread is cleaned up. Please keep it on topic. Thanks.
