I've been thinking the same.

Although isn't all that powerhead noise and vibration hurtful to the fish?

If theres a constant current on the bottom of the tank debris will never just be able to set there and eventually get sucked up in the filters. This can be easy if you have gravel or bare bottom and a little more tricky if you have sand you have to keep tweaking the angle of the powerhead so its not blowing sand every were.

It no different this a noisy HOB filter that will cause vibrations the fish will get use to it.

I bought two 1300GPH power heads to keep the bottom of my tank clean. I was constantly having waste on the bottom of my tank, all of my intakes where at the top of the tank, and the returns where in the top 1/4. So I had good water circulation just not enough on the bottom to keep gunk from settling.

Me personally I don't like to have anything in the tank that I don't have to, I would have rather not had a power head but I had to much gunk. So like the people said decided if you need on to fix a problem.

Also ebay has much better prices then pet(co|smart|land)

What substrate do you have in your tank if any?

Bare bottom tank.

That would depend on the flow pattern, of the power head I stuck a 500gph pump in the bottom of my tank 7x2 and it was not enough to keep the bottom clean and I had a bare bottom. With sand or any other type of substrate you get less water movement then when you have bare bottom because of the the un even surface.
