Exactly how a Mayans red terrors? Just because a bunch of pet stores lable them wrong doesn't make there common name red terror. Even though I guess they probably are more commonly labled red terrors then mayans. So I guess it is more common, but not there actual common name.
Just trying to prove a point about common names. I've never seen uro's labeled anything other than red terrors where I live. And I've only seen festae labeled as festae. Seeing as there are no "valid" common names you can call them whatever you want (besides festae).

It's the same with GTs...if I sold somebody an A. rivulatus I could truthfully call it a GT. If I sold them an A. sp. "gold saum" I could also truthfully say I sold them a GT. I call uropthalmus mayans, but I also call Polypterus senegalus sens or bichirs or whatever...but the LFS calls them dinosaur eels. Common names are silly.
When you have a legitimate beef is when the LFS labels it with an incorrect scientific name...ie all the S. leucosticta that get sold as S. jurupari.

First off half of the pet store employees/owners are not even aware there is a difference between uropthalmus & festea secondly it isonly alie if the personsold themknowing what species they had. The knowledge we have is not to be taken for granted that everyone knows what we do. A lot of timesthe store only goesby what they pruchased the fish as ie. if I bring in a batch of motageunse babiesbut tell them the fry are loiselli & they aren't aware their is a difference they'll resell them as loiselli. there is only a legite beef if a person knowingly sold them at a higher value & mislabled as a different species

I would not buy shoes from a car salesman....Why shouldn't aquatic hobby retailers be held to the same precedent? There is no excuse for not knowing your product.
I definitely agree the LFS should know their product and pay employees who also know what they are doing. I sometimes deal with a large fish farm that has sold uropthalmos as red terrors for 30 years. They don't "know better". Their competition does know the difference and that is why I buy from them most of the time.
The Mayan cichlid is so common an invasive fish in FL that they have another common name for it, the "ATOMIC SUNFISH". It is now as far north as Lakeland due to it's temperature tolerance. And they taste great. The state record is 2.3 lbs if you are the competitive type.
