And yes, this is probably a bluegill, if not some similar sunfish.

I've never heard of little Mayan so I googled and it makes me wonder how in the world they got in this little pond. This pond I could probably walk across that is man made in the middle of a strip mall type place. There is a ton of them too.

Someone dumped them there or they got there in a flood or heavy rains

Wait until they grow a bit. Striping pattern on the side throwing me off. Tons of cichlids look like this at this size, in 2 months or so you will probably get a good answer when they grow up a bit.
