i have owned both.

the 70-200 VR is great, the only advantages i've seen for the 70-200 VR compared to 80-200mm AF-D is-

slightly lighter (not a concern for myself)
Vibration reduction- Defo good

they are virtually the same in optical quality and sharpness.

this 80-200 however was 1/2 the price of a 70-200mm VR.

and on my current personal budget that was too much to spend.

on another note from now on i'm buying USA lenses after this one, no more grey market used equipment. I didn't think i'd have the problem but No Warrenty crept up on me. If it's expensive equipment, you want it protected.

I hear you loud and clear about grey market lenses. I'll never touch the stuff.

Right now the 70-200 is only $600 more than the 80-200, and that's why I'm going to at least try both in store before finally deciding. I'm wondering if the weight of the 80-200 would provide some relief from shaking and if that would be almost as valuable as the VR function?

I'll be finding out on friday. :)

Got myself a 100"x30"x30" tank a huge tigrinus cat a 16" flag fin prochilodus an 18" dat pulcher and hopefully over Xmas i will get one or two Leopoldi rays!

yep, weight definetly helps keep shots steady. I also have been carrying a monopod lately so that helps. Try both see what you like.:)
