What are your 2013 cichlid projects?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Well of course Ive still got my festae project going and I'm excited to see how my lil group of wild caught turn out:) I also am working on creating the ultimate blue umbee, starting by breeding location x with Rio mag which I have already done. Now I'm growing out those fry and will pair my best out with an unrelated magnumx from worldbelows:)
I'm also considering doing haitiensis again here soon:)

Hey, I joined the festae club this year. :)

Good idea!

Well firstly I have a Festae and an Electric Yellow that's currently living together, my 2013 plans for them is to move them to a bigger tank that what they're in now, and add other fish alongside them based on how big they are.

So these are my Festae and Electric Yellow:

The E. yellow was gonna be food for my Ellioti, but it grew on me so here it is instead. They're in a tiny tank, will be moved to this soon:

It's a 4ft, currently have so juvie cichlids, smaller than these two tho, so not sure if I should move them there yet. The Festae is about 3.5-4cm TL, the E. yellow is about 2.5-3cm TL, the juvie cichlids ranges from about 1.2-1.8cm. What do you guys reckon?

Second project is to add plants to my display tank, there's heaps of cichlids in there but amazingly they leave the current plants alone, so will try to add more variety.

Here's the tank:

As you guys can see it's pretty bare. The Ellioti is currently the king of the tank. Funny dynamic, it sorta paired with the Red Bay Snook, the Red Bay Snook bullies the Cobalt Blue, the Cobalt Blue goes after the larger Super Green Texas, the Super Green Texas can easily stand its ground against the Pink Firemouth, whilst the Pink Firemouth chases the Red Bay Snook. Unfortunately will eventually have to remove the Red Bay Snook since it's gonna outgrow the tank. :(

Thirdly, will be to crossbreed my Ellioti x Convict hybrids with a Red Bay Snook.

I have four Ellicons (Ellioti x Convict) in a separate tank, however they're hard as #!@% to photograph. Here's a pic of the one I will most likely use to breed, see if you can find it against the color of the rock in the blurry pic. :P

Will attempt to breed it with this Red Bay Snook or another one when it grows up:

Fourthly, will be maybe separating my Venustus juvies if a pair forms and let them establish a colony.

Here's two out of three:

No idea how to sex them tho.

Want to set up a few ponds about 200-300 gallons, Other than that just going to watch my fish grow. Also will be getting m&f trimac from madness asap so hopefully will have them breeding. Have f1 umbee fry that are showing incredible colors. Thinking about locating a nicaraguan f1 female dovii for my male to get him breeding again. Have a 20'x10' shed thats just waiting to be filled with tanks and ponds in my backyard once its available (filled with my moms crap lol) and i have a bit more money of course. Then we can start our breeding project (would like to be able to keep about 15-20 pairs)

Im currently trying to find some cichla, I have never seen them in my state. I wanna put them in a tank with FW rays (only ever seen two in my state).
Also wanna do a large CA tank and a decent tank with 5 or so oscars or maybe frontosa

Breeding my Thai silk cichlid when my female gets a little bigger.

I want to empty out my 135 (currently full of Guianacara and steindachneri) and do some sort of Mexican themed tank. I would like to get some green Petenia, but I'm not sure how long I could keep them in a 72x18 footprint. Once I have moved out the eartheaters I will be watching The Wet Spot's Fish list and see which interesting Mexican cichlids pop up....

Other than that, just watching everybody grow. :)

Lets see....... How about focus more on spawning my micropthalmus, setting up that 125 thats been sitting for over a year, and an overall update of most of my equipment, lights, tops for a few tanks and filters for a few others. Also downsizing some of my sub adults because my groups have mostly paired off. I would like to get a 3D background for the 125.
