Its my dream job and i know its risky. What have you seen to be successful? I know i have seen more failures than successes but all of those were too specialized to be in the area they were in.

Good Luck. I would love to do that myself. Not necessarily a pet store, to open my own LFS in my area. There is one little pet store here in town. They're too high priced and they don't have ****. The only other choice I have here is PetSmart. The only good places to go are about a hour away. My problem is I don't think it would do well in my area.

Ha that sucks... where I live there are like 20 lfs :D:D:D

I say go for it if you really want. But you have to be 100% commited don't just stop after a little bit cause you'll lose tons of money

Right now i'm a senior in highschool and plan on going to college for aquaculture and aquarium sciences and minoring in business. After that its either get a job working in an aquarium or opening my own store.

I was thinking of getting all types of animals except dogs and cats but specializing more in fw and sw fish and large birds. I think i would also offer a tank maintance, cleaning, setting up services, things like that. Maybe have a small space for adoption where a shelter could house a few of there cats are something too.

Birds would be macaws, minature macaws, cockatoos, amazons, senegals, conures, ringneck parakeets, maybe a toucan or toucanet, african greys. Plus appropriate cages and supplies.

FOr mammals, rabbits, hamsters, ferrets, maybe a few more exotic things.

Reptiles defiently bearded dragons and some popular snakes.

I would say good ideas. Also offer a installation set up too where you will deliver and setup tanks for them that they purchased at your store

If there are any lfs in your area I recommend trying to get a job or even volunteer there. When I was in high school I worked for 3 years in a store that is similar to what you want to start minus the birds and cat adoption. IT IS A LOT OF WORK!!! By getting "your feet wet" first lets you get a real experience and gives you a chance to see if you like it... good luck

only petsmart about 1 hr away. The other petstore i wouldnt work at, dont like the way they keep their animals.
