What are your thought of opening a pet store.

I would get maybe 1 rare bird and few common ones that will sell. Remember that when you first start its better to have bread and btter fish everyone can keep then ones no one can keep. Get rare stuff when you are a stabe facility and can spare to have investments

I've been pondering that idea for a long long time, good thing is I got close to a few per store owners and know that it is not easy, and its best to enjoy the hobby. If suddenly I was unemployed that is a different story. I have learned much from the few stores I visit frequently. all of which have their nitch. I would not make it as a pet store owner, because half of my stock would be "Owner's Pet not for sale!"

I think most stores should do private orders where you ask them to order something not in stock. Some stores already do this but only if you ask, they should put up signs or something

Don't do it. No money in it and it might put a bad taste in your mouth.

Best advice yet.

Another piece of advice...CHANGE YOUR MAJOR!

Get a medical, engineering or a the very least financial degree of some sort. If you are set on opening up the store, dont throw away the money on college for a BS...no literally a Bull S*** degree...and use it to open the store or some other business/investment.

I think I'd prefer to do a set up like Toyin's. That's the ticket. Then I could justify having lungfish, lol.

i plan to have my own store in approx 18 years(after i retire :D)
hopefully all will go to plan. i will def do something with animals when i retire

i live in a smaller town-and there was one mom and pop type of fish store that was here-but after years of competing with Petland (with their jacked prices and nasty fish) it couldnt survive and had to close. it saddened me, because they had rare fish-great prices and could order for you.

they now work strictly at selling online-and i guess are making more money at it.. no shop costs to upkeep.

The secret is to have an edge over the competition. Whether it's your stock or your pricing maybe special events-auction hosting-hosting club meetings-- something. Plus you must have the capital to lose before ever turning a profit.

Just my 2 cents,
Chris
