What are your top 10 aquarium fish you want to get?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Gourami Swami, I have kept the above 6 from your list, and they were all fabulous to keep, I would recommend them all.
The irregulars, wesseli, and lamena, all really need lots of current, as in fast moving stream almost rapids, to get enough oxygen, and live comfortably, they are up there on the difficulty scale.

The ornatum were easiest to keep, the menerabo out grew my 6 ft tanks, in about 2 years (easily hitting 15") and they needed to be in a social group, which made mega tank size even more important.

Thanks for the advice and great pics! Really a bunch of beautiful fish, of all people on this site I am not surprised that you have kept many of them.
I have not seen ornatum around for a while, would love to grow some out. Tank size is an issue for me at the moment, so many of these are going to have to wait quite a while. I have however, been seeing irregularis available, and may pick some up soon.
The Damba's are quite possibly my favorite from the list, but as you say, I can tell they need a huge tank. Someday...

Aba knife
Black wolf
Fahaka puffer
Cichlasoma ornatum
Green istlanum
Red hi fin wolf
Abei puffer
Suvatti puffer

Tank size has always been the limiting factor for me too, when young an average 150 gallon tank works OK for Paretroplus, but once they hit maturity, its very cramped, especially because of their social nature.
My last group of P maculatus had to be moved to a 400 gallon pool, and as soon as they were moved to adequate quarters they began spawning in opposite corners. The eggs are the little red/pink dots

Although I have yet to keep Astatheros altifrons, they are endemic to a nearby area, so there may be a chance of catching some wild ones.

Looks like they were very impressive. I love how they resemble SW tangs or angelfish so closely. Makes you think they must be less distantly removed from their ancestors than many FW fish.

If you collect youself some altifrons, please share pictures! They are also available at the moment, and if they still are when I am setting up new tanks in a couple months, I may grab some of those as well.

I will share pics of any cichlid I catch.
I still haven't figured out how to get a decent size tank to the island though, the transport may cost more than the tank, many hands to grease.
By the way
Paretroplus keineri is in my opinion, about the best one of the genus Paretroplus for smallish tanks, might even work in a 75 or 90 gal,I kept mine in a 100.

Those are very nice indeed! I prefer the damba's, but these would be a great substitute while I am stuck with smaller tanks. If I see any of these available I might have to scoop them up! Thanks for the info, I am not that well versed in the Malagasy cichlids.
