What arowana is best to start with?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
if you have a big enough tank, a silver would be great. i find them to be hardy.

My first aro was a juvenile silver because it was more readily available and cheaper than jars. I've kept both and would recommend either to start off with. Good luck!

No species of arowana is a "start with" type fish. There are many considerations that need to be taken first.

bderick is right. it takes alot of consideration before you can buy one.

although my tank is small (240g) i chose silvers, because i want to try a community, and i like tank mates

In my opinion I highly recommend the Jardini arowana or the Silver arowana. The silver will grow the fastest and get really big compare to the Jaridini although the Silver arowana is cheaper in price. The Jardini arowanan on the other hand is slighty more expensive and doesn't grow as fast as the silver, However; I like the jardini more due to the fact that is doesn't try to jump out of the tank as much as the silver arowana.

Since your in North America, I would say a silver would be a good first choice. With a silver, they are not expensive and you will learn nearly everything about keeping arowanas, so if and when the time comes for you to upgrade to a more exotic arowana such as one of the Scleropages species, you will be prepared and hopefully not have a heart attack at the price.
