No big cichlids in a 30 gallon. But you can get a pair of convicts or some rams or a pair of Honduran Red Points. They are all cichlids but just smaller ones. I currently have a spair 20 gallon and I'm looking to see if I can get a pair of any of these small cichlids to keep in it.
+1 on the red eared slider. Maybe a male map or a small musk.

Your best bet is to go to a site that has profiles of cichlids, pick out a few you like that don't get over 6" and then you we can help expand on the particular fish. I know cichild-forums as an accurate profile section as does gcca.net, whatever you do don't go to your PETsMART and look at their labels for info as they are never close to actual size.
