i use it all! alot of matrix, scrubbies, and generic ceramics... i have bio balls too but as mentioned, i use for a trickle and other bio for sumberged.
~30 gallons of Bio-balls. I've been using the same media for 15+ years, some of it is closer to 25 years old. While bio-balls may not have the same (claimed) surface area of ceramic media, it never clogs - my 15-year-old stuff works as well as when it was new.
in sump.
first chamber - pot scrubbies
second chamber - peat balls, carbon (as req)
third chamber - fluidized bed using drinking straws cut 15mm long and roughed up in runny cement (increases ease of bacterial colonisation). dont know how many...but theres a lot! oh and the heaters
fourth chamber - floss
5th chamber pump
