Usually around 2-2.5' in captivity, but in the wild, they can get much larger.

lol
i know the size of them hence why i do not own any yet until i ca have a tank or pond large enough for them. Beautiful fish in my mind, but according to the Petsmart here, they can fit in a 75 gallon....:screwy:

yup, at first i did not know. until i found this site in july, and started researching that fish. now i am pissed since, i wouldn't of bought the ID if i knew how big it got. but i think when they out grow the 55 i will trade in for community fish.

You'll be a lot more likely to be able to get rid of it if you trade it in now, rather than waiting for it to grow (if you wait too long, you may end up being stuck with it, unless you have already talked to someone about it and they've agreed to take it).

No worries, it happens too all us. When I started, an ID shark was the first fish I bought for my 15 gallon tank. That's right 15 gallon, but I was 5 years old, no internet and the pet store did not care.

But you live and learn right.

Yep, it has happened to me also, except in my case it was ( "is," actually) a pacu and a 220 gallon tank...

yeah plecos do poop a lot but i have an oscar in with a common pleco. i put the pleco in when the oscar was about 7-8 inches and the pleco was about 8. i think as long the pleco is about the same size or a little smaller that the oscar the they should be fine together, given that u have a big enough tank. my tank is a 75gal and they do just fine together
