What brand pellets do you feed your oscar?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
LOL...gonna have to go request a sample. :)

I feed mine Hikari Staple, Omega One, Aquarian and Wardley. Aquarian is a pretty cheap brand but it was given to me for Christmas, can't turn down free fish food of any kind.

Thanks for the info, everyone.

LFS has a frozen cube variety pack that includes bloodworms, glassworms, beefheart, and a couple other things. Sound good for an oscar?

I've always liked Hikari, New Life Spectrum and Dainichi. Dainichi is an excellent brand but can be expensive and/or kinda hard to find. they sell it over at www.kensfish.com very reasonably. I also like ken's home made foods but the pellets are a little higher in fat than I'd like. I think they're around 9% fat whereas Hikari is usually around 3.5-5% and Dainichi is like 3-4%. ken's home made freeze dried foods (krill superba and bloodworms primarily) are exceptional and he also sells freeze dried earthworms but I haven't gotten any of those yet. :)

Young oscars will probably eat most of that stuff but older oscars tend to waste a lot of it IME.

True, the particles are too small they will have no fun eating... For variety with my Oscars I use a commercial sea food product. It's from the supermarket, frozen. It's a mix of squid, clams, mussels, shrimps, and octopuss. I thaw it, chop everything in smaller pieces (dime-size) and place it in an ice cube tray to re-freeze it. Later I just pop a couple cubes, thaw it in a glass with hot water, and feed the beasts. They love the stuff. I also do this with cocktail shrimps and beef heart I buy at the butcher, same principle.

i use omega one and hikari pellets for all my oscars and cichlids...they are the best..no cloudy water and no funky oil at the top of the water...

:iagree: , my oscar used to eat everything but now only eats what he really prefers unless i starve him a bit, i guess since he's older and not growing so fast anymore he doesn't need that much food and can afford to be picky since he knows i can't stand him not eating
