What bugs do you feed your cichlids?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
My Uncle used to keep beehives and my oscars , cichlids and pacu grew like crazy on honey bee drones.

He used to come over with bags of dead drones and worker bees during the summer:popcorn:

My Jag's seem to like it all, I've even had the fry eating those small sugar ants. I've fed my jag's worms to moths, and they grub 'em literally. I havent seen any ill effects yet.

Throw whatever you find in there if your fish doesnt eat it then take it out. My jags eats whatever I throw in the tank and he is always well fed

Here in the southern US we get japanese beatles every year. My Jags, RD's and Buttikoferi love them. They will spit out the wings though!

Stinkbugs!!!

I feed my EBJD giant mealworms and nightcrawlers. I haven't tried crickets yet, that will be next time I'm at the LFS

Whatever spiders I catch ( unless it is a wolf spider, then I keep them)

I truly wish I'd caught this one. I might have been stumbling to the bathroom one night when instinct stopped me cold. I'd spotted a wolf spider a solid 4" across sitting in the middle of my room on white carpet.

I spent a week trying to catch/kill it, the missus spent a week sleeping upstairs.

It was around long enough that we named it Jim - Even though it was a gravid female.

I sincerely believe it's the 100% reason we had no mice. It was that large.

When I sold cars, I used to keep a black widow at my desk. We'd feed it flies during the summer. :grinno:

What we call wolf spiders up here never get more than 2 inches.

Ive seen quite large Wolves down here. Few inches across and fast. Certainly large enough that my friends dovii started acting strange for a few days after eating one, They think he got bit while eating it.
